Senate Votes to Begin Immigration Debate

On Tuesday, the Senate voted 82-15 to allow S. 744, the Senate Gang of 8's bipartisan immigration bill that would provide a pathway to citizenship for many of the country's 11 million undocumented immigrants, to be debated by the full Senate. Amendments are expected to be filed and debated over the next few weeks, with the Senate hoping to vote on a final bill before the July 4th recess. HIAS Discusses Worldwide Refugee Issues at UNHCR Consultations

HIAS' President and CEO, Mark Hetfield, and other HIAS staff are currently in Geneva participating in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Annual Consultations with non-governmental organizations from around the world. The consultations are three days of dialogue on the most critical refugee issues of the day and the work of UNHCR and its NGO partners. Learn more.

The event features Clint Bolick, co-author with Jeb Bush of the book by the same name, who will discuss three broad components of immigration reform that they believe must work together to produce a viable immigration policy: better immigration enforcement, a lawful pathway for future migrants, and the legalization of undocumented immigrants. Durham, NC Event on Immigration Reform

The Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federation's Community Relations Council and the Social Action Committees of Beth El, Judea Reform Congregation, and Kehillah Synagogue in Durham, North Carolina will host a community program this Saturday, June 9th to discuss why immigration reform is desperately needed and the different positions being discussed in Congress to address our broken immigration system. With the bipartisan Senate immigration bill S. 744 likely to be debated on the Senate floor next week, participants will be able to learn from advocates and experts playing a part in pushing for humane and comprehensive immigration reform, including Melanie Nezer, HIAS' Director of Policy and Advocacy. Immigration Reform Bill Advances in Senate

Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee finished its work on the Senate Gang of 8's bipartisan immigration bill. The bill, which would provide a pathway to citizenship for many of the country's 11 million undocumented immigrants, will be debated by the full Senate in June. The House of Representatives is working on their own immigration legislation, but no comprehensive bill has been introduced.
