Asylum
Summary
HIAS works to advance laws and policies that protect those who seek safety in the United States based on persecution or fear of persecution on account of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. In 2011, the U.S. granted asylum to nearly 25,000 individuals. Those found eligible for asylum are permitted to remain in the U.S. permanently. Unlike the U.S. Refugee Program, which provides protection to refugees by bringing them to the U.S. for resettlement, the U.S. Asylum Program provides protection to qualified individuals who are already in the U.S. or are seeking entry.
